FGP Minicomics

FGP (Fool’s Gold Press) Minicomics represent my earliest work as a comics author-illustrator. They’re not exactly “diamonds in the rough”… but they MIGHT be gold, depending on your point of view.

The Backstory
A mini start
Before I started Ultrastellar, I made a bunch of other comic stories over the years, ones that were printed & sold as self-published minicomics under the imprint name “Fool’s Gold Press”.

Minicomics, or “minis” — self-published comics, usually photocopied & stapled & sold wherever possible — were something I did alongside my work at commercial animation studios, then as a freelance motion graphics artist. I didn’t think I had enough talent or skill to work as a professional comics writer-artist, but I definitely had my own stories I wanted to tell, so I’d make them as I was able. And after a while, it turns out I’d made quite a few!

FGP Title Summaries

Exit At The Axis
Exit At The Axis was my first series (and the only one that’s been properly concluded). It’s an 8-issue wintry roadtrips-and-relationships tale with a splash of mystery and intrigue.

Fool’s Errand
This mystery-focused sequel series to Exit At The Axis was called Fool’s Errand. Unfortunately, you really jinx yourself when you name your passion project something like “Fool’s Errand”; I stopped the series after 3 issues and it remains unfinished.

Odd-Job Rod
For something new, fresh and light-hearted, I devised Odd-Job Rod as a way to tell random short gag stories. Stories so short, there’s only one issue!

Power Moves
Power Moves followed, with a premise I love dearly (jerky, self-centered insurance broker discovers he can give powers to others, but not himself) and wanted to tell, but could never devote the time to continue beyond its first issue.

Tales Of October
Resuming the idea of shorter plots, I started Tales Of October, a collection of gloomy & mysterious short stories set in a fictional version of my hometown.

Salvager Kain
Finally, I begn my “survivalist comedy” series Salvager Kain with its single-issue plots. Unlike my previous false starts, this one lasted 5 issues, but then stopped once I became a dad!
I plan to add expanded summaries & sample pages for each FGP title, but for now I encourage you to check out my new work: the full-color, kid-friendly “coming-of-age / portal adventure” story, also known as Ultrastellar!
